How to Choose the Right Interior Paint Colors for Your Home
Choosing paint colors for your home is one of the most exciting — and sometimes overwhelming — parts of any painting project. With thousands of shades available, how do you narrow it down to the ones that will make your rooms feel exactly the way you want?
As a painter with over a decade of experience helping Colorado Springs homeowners select colors, I’ve picked up some strategies that make the process much easier and more enjoyable.
Start with What You Already Have
Before heading to the paint store, look at what’s already in the room. Your furniture, flooring, artwork, and textiles all have colors in them. Pulling a paint color from something you already love in the space is one of the most reliable ways to create a cohesive look.
Consider Your Lighting
This is the single biggest factor most people overlook. A color that looks perfect in the store can look completely different in your home. North-facing rooms get cooler, bluer light. South-facing rooms get warm, golden light. The same gray can look blue in one room and warm in another.
Always test paint samples on your actual walls and look at them at different times of day before committing.
Think About the Flow
If your home has an open floor plan or rooms that are visible from one another, think about how colors will look together. You don’t need to paint every room the same color, but choosing a cohesive palette — colors that share undertones — will create a harmonious flow throughout your home.
Don’t Fear Color
Neutrals are beautiful and timeless, but don’t be afraid to add personality with color. An accent wall, a rich cabinet color, or a bold front door can add character without overwhelming a space. Some of my favorite projects have been helping homeowners step outside their comfort zone with a color that transforms the entire energy of a room.
